Virginia DUI Consequences

Driving under the influence (DUI) arrests don’t just happen to bad people. Sometimes people like you go out with friends to enjoy a few cocktails. Since most people do not carry around breathalyzer tests, it may be difficult to determine your blood alcohol content (BAC) before getting behind the wheel of a car. There are many factors that determine a person’s BAC including gender and weight.

In Virginia, it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle with a BAC of .08 percent or higher for drivers over the age of 21. For drivers under 21, it is illegal to drive with a BAC of .02 percent or higher.

Unfortunately, the consequences of a DUI charge are very serious, and for many, life altering. You have to worry about the legal consequences such as time in jail, license suspension, fines, ignition interlock devices, and much more.

There are many other consequences that come along with a DUI conviction. You will definitely have problems with your vehicle insurance. Your company will either increase your rates or drop you altogether. This is because you are considered a bad risk after a conviction.

Your job will also suffer as a result of a DUI charge. If you have a commercial driver’s license or must drive as part of your job, you will have immediate problems after your driver’s license is suspended. Even if you don’t make a living by driving, it may become increasingly difficult to make it to work on time without a driver’s license, which may lead to your job termination.

You will also face problems finding future employment. With more employers conducting background checks on job applicants, your employer will find out about your DUI charge, and if a clean driving and criminal record is required for the position, you will lose out on valuable job opportunities.

DUI law is extremely complicated and you should not try to represent yourself. It is in your best interest to find a law firm that focuses exclusively on DUI cases.
